‘Zero tolerance for evicting illegal establishments on river banks’

DHAKA, Feb 6, 2019 (BSS)- Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping Md. Abdus
Samad said the authorities would show zero tolerance for evicting illegal
establishments on the banks of the rivers.

“After eviction of the illegal structures, the river banks will be marked.
Walkways will be built and tree plantation programme will be undertaken to
mark the river banks, he told while witnessing the eviction drive in city’s
Kamrangirchar area today, said a ministry press release.

The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) is conducting
drives in Koylaghat and Islambag area of Kamrangirchar on Wednesday for the
second consecutive day to demolish illegal establishments along the Buriganga
River.

More than 252 illegal establishments along with three four-storey
buildings, two three-storey buildings, five two-storey buildings and 208
shacks and stalls were demolished in today’s drive.

Earlier, some 200 illegal establishments were demolished in Nabanchar area
on the first day of the drive on Tuesday.

BIWTA has identified 609 illegal establishments, including 56 multi-storey
buildings, on the banks of the Buriganga River from Sadarghat to Gabtoli area
and these are being evicted in phases.

The eviction drive will continue till February 19.
