Stocks extend loss as major sectors dip

DHAKA, Feb 6, 2019 (BSS) – Stock markets extended loss on Wednesday with falling trend of all major indices of the Dhaka and Chittagong stock exchanges as most of the major sectors closed lower.

The major falling sectors were food and allied, paper and printing, pharmaceuticals and chemicals and telecommunication when 141 securities of the large-cap group incurred loss due to lower activities.

“Index showed a fluctuating trend in the first hour. In the second hour of the session, index started to fall and continued in the third hour. In the final hour of the session, the index rebounded a bit. At the end of the day, the index closed red,” said Lanka Bangla Securities Limited.

The broader index DSEX of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) finished the session of the week 14.23 points down at 5,786.01. The Shariah DSES followed it by 5.04 points down at 1,312.04 when the blue-chip DS30 finished the day marginally up at 2,022.58.

The daily turnover in value at DSE increased by 8.52 per cent to Taka 766.85 crore, but the volume of trading shares declined by 2.32 percent to 16.79 crore shares.

Among the traded 346 issues at DSE, 114 closed lower against 185 gaining issues.

The top five gaining companies were Eastern Insurance, Sonar Bangla Insurance, Asia Insurance, Provati Insurance and BNICL. The major losers were Meghan Pet, Hakkani Pulp, PLFSL, Advent and BSCCL.

UPGDCL topped the turnover list followed by GENEXIL, Sonar Bangla Insurance, PTL and BSCCL.

Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also closed the day down, with its major CASPI 15.90 points down at 17,718.71. At CSE, a total of 277 issues were traded while 97 closed higher and 151 closed lower as 1.07 crore shares worth Taka 36.01 crore changed hands.
