Ovechkin passes Fedorov for most NHL points by Russian

WASHINGTON, Feb 6, 2019 (BSS/AFP) – Alex Ovechkin overtook Sergei Fedorov
Tuesday for the most regular-season points scored in the NHL by a Russian-
born player as the Washington Capitals beat Vancouver 3-2.

Ovechkin’s assist on T.J. Oshie’s first-period goal was enough to see him
break a tie with Fedorov as he moved to 1,180 points in his 14 NHL seasons.

The 33-year-old Capitals captain broke the record in his 1,055th NHL game
— 193 games fewer than Fedorov played.

Ovechkin had long surpassed Fedorov for most NHL goals by a Russian-born
player. He has 644 goals and 536 assists in his career to date while Fedorov
— who won three Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings — amassed 483 goals
and 696 assists.

“When you come to the NHL, you just had a dream of scoring one goal or
two. Now to be No. 1 on the all-time (Russian) list, it’s pretty amazing,”
said Ovechkin, who led the Capitals to their first Stanley Cup title last
season when he scored a league-best 15 goals to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as
playoff Most Valuable Player.

He leads the NHL with 37 goals this season.

“It’s hard work and lots of hockey, and I’m proud for my family and for my
dad, who spent all that time with me,” he said.
