Jaha Alam’s imprisonment regrettable, unexpected: Hasan
DHAKA, Feb 05, 2019 (BSS) – Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said the incident of long imprisonment of an innocent person, Jaha Alam, in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), is regrettable and unexpected.
“It’s really regrettable and unfortunate that Jaha Alam suffered imprisonment for long three years without committing any crime. I hope that the ACC would take necessary steps against those persons who were involved in the crime,” he told a view-exchange meeting with the representatives of Directors Guild, an organisation of television drama makers in Bangladesh at his Secretariat office here.
Hasan said the ACC is a constitutional body. The ACC authorities have already admitted their mistakes and the anti-corruption watchdog launched an investigation into the incident.
The minister hoped that the ACC will take the necessary steps against the persons who were responsible for the incident as an innocent person had been in jail for three years for the anti-graft body’s mistake.
Jaha Alam, a jute mill worker, had been languishing in jail since February 2016, 26 in a corruption cases in place of the real accused. He was released from Kashimpur Central Jail-2 in Gazipur early Monday following a High Court order.
About the advertisement industry, Hasan said though there are many smart and talented artistes in the country, some advertisements are being made abroad to air here, depriving the local artistes.
Directors Guild advisor Syed Hasan Imam, president Salauddin Lablu, vice presidents Kochi Khandakar and Shahid Raihan, general secretary SA Haque Alique and joint secretary Ridi Haque, among others, were present in the meeting.
Later, the information minister addressed the closing ceremony of training for journalists organized by Bangladesh Press Council (BPC) with its Chairman Justice Md Momtaj Uddin Ahmed in the chair.
The training was held at BPC office in city’s Topkhana area, said a press release here.
In the closing session, Hasan said the authentic journalism opens the third eye of a society and it helps the society and state to move forward in right way.
Information Secretary Abdul Malek, Press Council Secretary Md Shah Alam and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) general secretary Sohel Haider Chowdhury, among others, spoke on the occasion.
