Bangladesh eyes for more RMG export to US: Tipu

DHAKA, Feb 5, 2019 (BSS) – Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi today said Bangladesh has eyed to export more readymade garment (RMG) items to the US market as the country has the capacity to supply any quantity of order.

“There is scope to increase the export of RMG products to the US market. . . Bangladesh seeks the cooperation and support from the USA towards boosting the trade and business,” said the minister during a meeting with US Ambassador Earl R Miller at his secretariat office.

Bangladesh has set target of $ 60 billion export goal by 2021, of which $ 50 billion is eyed from the RMG.

“I want to be a good salesman for Bangladesh,” said the US Ambassador mentioning that work environment of Bangladesh’s RMG factory has improved specifically.

Referring to the existing good trade and economic relation between Bangladesh and United States, he said both the countries would get benefit if bilateral trade is boosted further.

In fiscal 2017-18, Bangladesh has exported products worth $ 6 billion to US market against the import of $ 1.7 billion.

The commerce minister said Bangladesh is developing 100 special economic zones with the initiative of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the United State would be benefited if they invest here. The government is ensuring all types of facilities for the foreign investors, he added.

Additional Secretary S M Redwan Hossain, WTO cell director general Munir Chowdhury and additional secretary Sharifa Khan were present.
