Eviction drive in Karnaphuli River continues

CHATTOGRAM, Feb 5, 2019 (BSS)- The ongoing eviction drive on both banks of the river Karnaphuli, the economic life line of country’s premier sea port Chattogram, is continuing on second consecutive day.

Chattogram District Administration in collaboration with different stake holders including Chattogram Development Authority, Chattogram Port Authority, Directorate of Chattogram Environment, Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) and power development board is conducting the drive, led by executive magistrate and assistant commissioner (land) of Patenga Tahmilur Rahman.

Senior Assistant Commissioner of CMP Nobel Chakma and senior ASP Kazi Mohammad Tareq Aziz are assisting the drive with over 200 members of law enforcing agencies.

During the drive, one kilometer area in north bank of the river Karnaphuli has been freed from illegal occupation and nearly four acres of land were recovered by bulldozing 80 illegal structures.

The demolished structures include business establishments, the offices of different organizations, warehouses and a tin-roofed structure of different Jetty ghats.

The environment activists and locals welcomed the eviction drive and feared the illegal occupier could be occupied again, if not monitored regularly.

On July 18 in 2010, the High Court, after hearing a writ petition by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh, ordered to stop the river’s encroachment, land filling, and construction of all types of establishments on the river banks.
