NBR to engage students in survey for new taxpayers

DHAKA, Feb 5, 2019 (BSS) – National Board of Revenue (NBR) would conduct a survey by engaging students to bring more people under tax net.

In the survey, students would collect information on lifestyle of people across the country for the convenient of the tax authority.

Talking to BSS today, NBR Chairman Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said: “In the country, there are a good number of people who are eligible for tax submission but they don’t pay. To bring those people under the tax net, we would engage students to run a survey this fiscal.”

Initially, the survey would be conducted in Dhaka and other divisional headquarters, and then gradually in districts and Upazilas across the country, he added.

Mentioning that they have taken the decision of engaging the students following the suggestion of former finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, the NBR Chairman said: “We’ve already communicated with the students and they are eager to be involved in the process.”

He said the students will visit different housea and make an assessment by collecting the information of their lifestyle like whether they have any TIN or car, home, flat etc. “Revenue officials will always help the students.”

Mosharraf said by participating in this process, the students would not only get financial benefit but also acquire skill.

“This fiscal students of Dhaka University’s economics department and business faculties would get the chance to be involved in the survey. But NBR has a plan to engage more students of other institutions later,” he said.

Currently, tax contributes 10 percent to the GDP but this rate has to be increased to 15 percent. That is why the NBR is giving emphasis on bringing new people under tax net, said the Chairman.
