National Library Day tomorrow

DHAKA, Feb 4, 2019 (BSS) – The National Library Day will be observed
tomorrow through various programmes across the city.

The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has chalked out elaborate programmes to
observe the day aiming at building an educated and enlightened nation and
making the people more library-oriented.

On the eve of the day, President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina issued separate messages greeting all concerned and wishing success of
the day’s programmes.

In his message, President Abdul Hamid said, “Books play a vital role in
building a civilized society. A library contains the chronological changes of
a country and nation’s education, taste and culture through books or other
documentaries. So, library is a bridge between education and culture of the
past and the present time”.

As the library remains unrestricted for all to provide any relevant
services, including reading, information and research, it is termed as a
university for public, he added.

The human beings are being turned into robots gradually in the revolution
of ICT, the President said, adding, “The book can be the best alternative to
overcome such situation”.

Hamid urged all government and non-government institutions, including the
Bangla Academy and the Public Library Department, to come forward in this
regard.

He hoped that the observance of the day will make the people aware of the
services provided by library.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said the Awami League (AL)
government has taken massive development programmes in the country’s library
sector aiming at enlightening and enriching the people through gathering
knowledge, conducting researches and practicing culture.

adding that the implementation works of Chattogram Muslim Institute
Multipurpose Cultural Complex project has begun while the implementation
works of development projects and online management of the Sufia Kamal
National Public Library in the city are going on in full swing.

The new phase of the Mobile Library Project, earlier operated by the
Bishwo Shahitto Kendro, is now being implemented under the Public Libraries
Department, the premier said, adding that the manpower of the libraries are
being imparted trainings home and abroad under the Libraries Unlimited
Project of British Council.

Sheikh Hasina said the process of approval of different projects, including
reconstruction of Public Libraries Department, vertical extension of 50
government public libraries and online management at government public
libraries across the country, is on the way to begin.

The Directorate of Archives and Libraries is working relentlessly to
preserve the valuable components history-heritage and literature and culture
of the Bangalis, the Prime Minister said.

Continuous implementation of massive activities, including providing books
free of cost by the National Book Centre and financial assistance to the non-
