Uncapped Naeem gets call up for first Test

DHAKA, Jan 26, 2018 (BSS)- The 17-year-old uncapped all-rounder Naeem Hasan was included in the 14-man squad for the first Test against visiting Sri Lanka that will begin on January 31 at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board on Friday announced the squad.

The first Test will also see the Tigers return to Test cricket under a new captain as all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan takes the charge of the side.

Naeem, who showed impressive performance during the U-19 Asia Cup is currently playing in the ICC Under-19 World Cup. Naeem would be used as a backup spinner to Mehedi Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam.

Kamrul Islam Rabbi, who last played for Tigers during their lone Test against India at Hyderabad last year, was the other inclusion in the Test squad.

Meanwhile, top order batsman Soumya Sarkar and pacer Taskin Ahmed, who were both dropped in the ongoing triangular series, did not get a call up for the first Test.

Pacer Shafiul Islam and Subashis Roy, who were part of the Test squad of Bangladesh’s tour of South Africa last year, were also not considered. Batsman Sabbir Rahman was also excluded from the squad for the first Test.

Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmud Ullah (Vice Captain), Tamim Iqbal, Liton Kumer Das, Mushfiqur Rahim, Imrul Kayes, Mominul Haque, Mosaddek Hossain Saikat, Taijul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Kamrul Islam Rabbi, Mehidy Hassan Miraz, Rubel Hossain and Naeem Hasan.
