Man gets life-term for killing wife in Panchagarh

RANGPUR, Jan 28, 2019 (BSS) – A Panchagarh court today sentenced a man to
death for murdering his wife in Dakshin Goalpara village of Sadar upazila in
Panchagarh district two-year back.

Judge of the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court of Panchagarh
Mohammad Anisur Rahman handed down the sentence in a crowded courtroom in
presence of the convict.

The convict is Shamim Hossain, 32, son of Amir Hossain of the same village.

The court simultaneously fined Shamim Taka 5,000 saying in default he would
have to languish in jail for one year more.

According to prosecution, Shamim Hossain strangled his wife Jahanara Begum,
mother of two children, to death on January 12, 2017.

Noticing the killing of Jahanara, her brother Akbar Ali filed a murder case
in this connection accusing Shamim, his father Amir Hossain and mother Alimon
Begum with Panchagarh Sadar Thana on the same day.

After investigation, Investigation Officer (IO) and Sub-Inspector of
Panchagarh Sadar Thana Bhabesh Chandra Paul submitted chargesheet against
Shamim Hossain to the court on April 23, 2017 when the trial began.

The names of the killer’s father Amir Hossain and mother Alimon Begum were
excluded from the chargesheet as allegations brought against them were not
proved during the investigation.

After examining 15 witnesses, the court found accused Shamim Hossain guilty
and announced the verdict against him today.

Additional Public Prosecutor of Panchagarh Advocate Jahangir Alam stood for
the state while senior lawyer Advocate Adam Sufi defended the accused side.
