DHAKA, Jan 27, 2019 (BSS) – Detail Engineering Design (DED) for the
construction of 22-km Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line-3 from Airport to Jhilmil,
Keraniganj has been finalized aiming at resolving traffic congestion in the
capital city.

“Once the BRT Line-3 from Airport to Jhilmil project is completed, it will
transport 30,000 passengers from both sides of the route in an hour,”
additional secretary of road transport and highways division M Belayet
Hossian told BSS here today.

He said the 22-km BRT Line-3 having 16 stations would be constructed from
Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to Jhilmil, Keraniganj.

According to the project details, the BRT Line-3 would have inter-
connection facility with the under construction Gazipur-Airport BRT at Hazrat
Shahjalal International Airport station.

For this, passengers would be able to travel from Gazipur to Jhilmil by
using BRT System without any interruption. The ministry has planned to
implement the project in three phases.

In the phase-1, the authority will implement the project from Airport to
Mohakhali, phase-2 will be completed from Mohakhali to Gulistan and phase-3
will be implemented from Gulistan to Jhilmil, Keraniganj over Buriganga
River.

The government has requested the World Bank to finance phase-1 of the
project through Economic Relations Division and the World Bank in principal
has agreed to give the fund for the project, official said.

Besides, the government has been implementing a 20-year Strategic Transport
Plan (STP) to resolve the traffic congestion in Dhaka City.

Meanwhile, as a part of reducing traffic congestion in Dhaka, a 20km Bus
Rapid Transit (BRT) from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to Gazipur
intersection is being constructed.

There will be 25 stations, six fly-overs, 4.50km elevated BRT lane from
Uttara to Tongi and 16km flat grade on the route and 18-metre-long 100
articulated buses will run on the route. There will be an electronic smart
card system for collecting bus fare.

Once the project is completed, it will take only 50 minutes to travel from
Gazipur to airport with the frequency of buses between 2 and 5 minutes. Some
25,000 passengers will be able to travel from both sides of the route in an
hour.
