Khirshapat mango to get GI recognition

DHAKA, Jan 26, 2019 (BSS) – Industries Minister Nurul Mazid Mahmud Humayun today said Khirshapat mango of Chapainawabganj, one of the most popular varieties of mango, will get Geographical Indication (GI) for its extraordinary and unique quality.

As part of the GI recognition, the industries minister will hand over certificate formally at a function to be held at the Industries Ministry tomorrow, an official release said.

State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumdar is expected to attend the function as the special gust while Secretary-in-Charge Md Abdul Halim will preside over it.

Khirshapat Mango in the Chapainawabganj is a tasty and juicy variety of mango. Khirshapat makes up 20 to 25 percent of total mango production in the country.

Gradually, mango exporting is increasing in different countries particularly in Europe and Middle East. Among the mango export varieties, Kirshapat mango has been listed on top position.

GI is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or reputation that are due to that origin. In addition, the qualities, characteristics or reputation of the product should be essentially due to the place of origin.
