Steps taken to bring poultry farmers under registration

RAJSHAHI, Jan 25, 2019 (BSS)- Initiative has been taken to bring all the
poultry farmers and feed sellers under registration aims at ensuring safe and
good poultry farming practices for sound public health.

Department of Livestock Services (DLS) has taken the decision at a meeting
with district and upazila level DLS officials, poultry farmers and other
stakeholders.

Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB) organised the meeting at Paba
upazila DLS office on Thursday in association with UKaid and British Council
under an issue-based project titled “Food Safety Governance in Poultry Sector
in Bangladesh”.

Chaired by District Livestock Officer (DLO) Dr Zulfikar Akhter Hossain,
the meeting was addressed, among others, by Upazila Livestock Officer Dr
Khandaker Sagar Ahmed, CAB District Unit Secretary Golam Mostofa Mamun, its
Upazila Unit President Kazi Nazmul Islam and Field Officers Mohidul Hassan
and Mozammel Haque.

The experts unanimously said ensuring a good poultry farming practice is
very important for sound public health.

Utmost emphasis should be given to bringing all the poultry farmers,
traders, feed manufactures, sellers and others concerned under necessary
training to enhance their awareness in this regard.

Dr Zulfikar Akhter Hossain gave an overview of poultry sector in the
region. He put forward a set of recommendations to make the poultry sector
safe and hygienic.

“The role of farmers and retailers is very important to ensure feed safety
with resisting high-powered antibiotics use in it,” Dr Zulfikar said adding
that using these overrated antibiotic in poultry feed is harmful to public
health. So, time has come to look into the matter with utmost emphasis.

He told the meeting that all the DLS officials and staff are working in
the field level to remove the existing irregularities and anomalies in the
poultry sector for the sake of safe poultry meat production.
