7th Padma bridge span to be installed tomorrow

DHAKA, Jan 22, 2019 (BSS) – The construction of the 6.15-kilometre Padma Bridge is progressing fast as its seventh span will be installed tomorrow making 1,050 meters of the bridge visible.

The span of the country’s longest bridge will be set up at the Zajira point on 36th and 27th pillars, engineers of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project told BSS today.

According to the sources, the span will be the sixth at Zajira point in Shariatpur district and the seventh of the overall as one span was installed at the Mawa point in Munshiganj district. The bridge will have a total of 41 spans.

The seventh span was taken to Zajira point by a ship this morning for the installation. If everything remains okay, the span will be installed tomorrow, sources said.

Earlier about the project progress, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said the construction of the bridge has been going fast as 63 percent overall work of the project has been completed.

“The overall progress of Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project has reached 63 percent now while 73 percent work of the main bridge has been done so far,” he told reporters after a meeting with officials of Bridge Division and Bridge Authority in the Setu Bhaban auditorium on Sunday.

He said excepting the seventh span, 17 others were kept ready to be installed as soon as possible and work on 18 others was underway.

Quader said work of 191 piles out of total 261 has been done and partial work of 15 more has been completed while work of 16 piers among total 42 has been done and work of 15 others is underway.
