Key accused held over Julhaz-Tonoy murder

DHAKA, Jan 16, 2018 (BSS) – Police arrested an operative of the militant organisation Ansar-Al Islam on charges of masterminding the killings of Julhaz Mannan and Mahbub Tonoy from Tongi, on the outskirts of the capital, on Tuesday evening.

“We arrested one Asadullah (25), an active operative of the military wing of Ansar-Al Islam, from Tongi area around 6.15 pm on Tuesday as he was wanted as one of the key accused in the Julhaz-Tonoy murder of 2016,” an official of counter terrorism department of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

“Police has so far arrested four members out of 13 militants for their involvement in the killings,” he said, adding that the arrestees Asadullah and Arafat took part in the killings directly while two other arrestees Zubair and Saimon were members of intelligence group.

As many as seven militants including the four were present when Juhaz and his friend Tonoy were brutally killed in his capital’s Kalabagan residence on April 25, 2016.

The arrestee, Asadullah was a member of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, before joining Ansar Al Islam and was involved in snatching away firearms from police at Satarkul under Badda Police Station in 2016.
