BMDA officials urged to produce quality seeds

RAJSHAHI, Jan 15, 2019 (BSS)- Agricultural officials and researchers have
urged the field level officials of Barind Multipurpose Development Authority
(BMDA) to discharge their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty for
boosting quality seed outputs to meet up its gradually increasing demand.

They termed the quality seed as the precondition to enhance agricultural
yield and called upon the field staffs to accelerate its production through
the best uses of high yielding varieties and modern technologies.

They came up with the observation while addressing a daylong training
styled “Quality Paddy and Wheat Seed Production and Less-water Consuming
Crops Farming” held at BMDA conference hall in Rajshahi today.

BMDA under its ‘Quality Seed Production, Distribution and Farmers Training
Project’ organized the training where more than 35 BMDA Executive Engineers
and Assistant Engineers from Chapainawabganj, Naogaon and host Rajshahi
attended.

BMDA Chairman Dr Akram Hossain Chowdhury addressed the inaugural session as
chief guest while Executive Director Engineer Abdur Rashid as special guest
with ATM Rafiqul Islam, Director of the project, in the chair. Superintending
Engineers Dr Abul Kashem and Shamsul Huda also spoke.

Chief Scientific Officer of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Dr Amimul
Islam, Principal Scientific Officer of Bangladesh Wheat and Maize Research
Institute Dr Ilias Hossain and District Seed Certification Officer Sirajul
Islam conducted training sessions as resource persons.

They narrated the aspects of quality seeds of various crops including paddy
and wheat besides farming techniques in the Barind area.

Quality seed is very vital to improve crop yield and taking the issue into
active consideration the step should be taken to feed the country’s
increasing population.

Rafiqul Islam told the meeting that the BMDA has been implementing the Tk
9.86 crore five-year project in 25 upazilas of Rajshahi, Naogaon and
Chapainawabganj districts to boost quality seed production to meet up its
gradually rising demands for more agricultural outputs in the region.

Dr Akram Chowdhury says more importance should be given on the crops which
need less-irrigation. On the other hand, he said the agriculture system of
the drought-prone barind tract has started facing problems due to
multifarious reasons including the adverse impact of climate change.

He suggested development and dissemination of appropriate farm machinery
like power tiller operated seeder, strip till and zero till, bed planter,
reaper and thresher to promote the less-water consuming crops especially
wheat successfully.
