Wildlife Crime Control Unit recovers 165 wild birds from Tongi

DHAKA, Jan 13, 2019 (BSS) – As catching, selling and carrying are strictly prohibited, a team of Wildlife Crime Control Unit (WCCU) seized 165 different species of wild birds from Tongi industrial city area today.

On a tip-off, a team of the WCCU under the ministry of environment and forest made a sudden raid in Tongi bazaar area and recovered the wild birds from there as the sellers made a safe exit.

The Wildlife Crime Control Unit led by its Inspector Ashim Mallik told BSS that “A WCCU unit team conducted a drive in Tongi bazaar area and recovered 165 different species of wild birds, including Parrot, Myna, Munia, Dove and Shalik.”

Of the recovered wild birds, 95 are Tila Munia, 25 black-headed Munia, 9 Parrots, 8 Kath Shalik, 8 Bath Shalik, five Juti Shalik, 18 Tila dove and a Myna.

“Catch, sale and carrying of any species of local wildlife is a punishable offense,” said the WCCU Inspector, adding that as per the World Life Conservation and Security Act 2012, one-year imprisonment and Taka 50,000 fine or both will be imposed after identifying those responsible for the catch of the wild birds.

The recovered birds were released at the Botanical Garden at Mirpur this afternoon.
