Deal for 40 BG locomotives tomorrow

DHAKA, Jan 13, 2019 (BSS) – The government is set to sign an agreement with US based company for procuring 40 broad gauge (BG) locomotives aimed at ensuring railway service as public mode of transport.

“Bangladesh Railway (BR) would sign the contract with the US based railway company ‘Progress Rail’ to supply the locomotives,” Additional Director General (Rolling Stock) of BR Md Shamsuzzaman told BSS today.

The company, he said, will begin to supply locomotives after 24 months of agreement and Asian Development Bank (ADB) is financing for the project.

According to the project details, Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan will witness the contract signing ceremony as the chief guest at Rail Bhaban.

Additional Director General (Rolling Stock) of BR Md Shamsuzzaman and a representative of Progress Rail would sign the deal on behalf of their respective sides, while senior vice-president of the company will present.

The project detail said Progress Rail, a Caterpillar company, is one of the largest integrated and diversified providers of rolling stock and infrastructure solutions and technologies for global rail customers, with nearly 200 facilities in 16 countries.

Progress Rail delivers advanced EMD locomotives and engines, railcars, track work, fasteners, signaling, rail welding and Kershaw Maintenance-of-Way equipment, along with dedicated locomotive and freight car repair services, aftermarket parts support and recycling operations.
