BGB seizes drugs worth Tk 4.80 crore

RANGPUR, Jan 10, 2019 (BSS) – Lalmonirhat 15 Battalion of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized huge smuggled drugs worth over Taka 4.80 crore and arrested 112 drug traders and smugglers from different frontiers under its jurisdictions last year.

“The number of drug addicts and drug traders has reduced to the minimum now as a result of following the ‘zero tolerance policy’ against drug by BGB members round the clock along the frontiers in last 12 months,” a press release said today.

The drugs and narcotics substances were seized while being smuggled into Bangladesh through different bordering points of Lalmonirhat and Kurigram under jurisdictions of Lalmonirhat 15 BGB Battalion from January to December last year.

The seized goods included 638.26 kilogram of ganja, 10,110 bottles of phensidyl syrup, 1,862 bottles of wine, 821 pieces of Yaba tablets, 24 mini packets of heroin, 751 bottle of Scaf syrup, 40 pieces of Viagra tablets and other smuggled drugs.

A total of 112 drug traders and smugglers were arrested along with the seized drugs and narcotics substances and 844 cases were filed in these connections with the respective police stations before handing them over to police, the release added.

Talking to BSS, Commanding Officer of Lalmonirhat 15 BGB Battalion Lt Colonel Md Anwar-Ul-Alam said the success in curbing drug smuggling was achieved following massive public awareness building activities conducted along the frontiers.

“We are conducting awareness building activities to motivate the frontier people in extending resistance against cross border criminals, drug smuggling and drug trading to keep the bordering areas safe and secured and free the society from drugs,” he added.
