EC announces DNCC by-polls schedule

DHAKA, Jan 9, 2017 (BSS) – The Election Commission today formally announced the schedule for the February 26 by-election to the mayoral post of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).

The deadline for filing nomination for the polls has been set for January 18 as election will be held on February 26.

“The deadline for filing nomination for the DNCC by-polls has been set for January 18 and January 21 to 22 has been set for scrutinizing, said Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda at a press briefing held at the Media Room of the Election Commission (EC) in city’s Agargaon.

Election commissioners and acting secretary of the commission, among others, were present at the briefing.

Huda said the mayor post of the DNCC has remained vacant after the death of Annisul Huq and election to the city corporation will be held on February 26.

“The deadline for withdrawing candidacy has been set for January 29”, he added.

He said the voting will also be held in 36 new wards and 12 reserved wards for women newly included in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on the same day.

“We won’t do any compromise in holding the election in a free, fair and credible manner…The EC is considering the poll as significant one,” Huda said.

Seeking all out cooperation from all, Huda said, “We expect support from all stakeholders including government, candidates and voters to hold the election in a free and credible manner. We also hope that the election will be a vote festival.”

EC Joint Secretary Md Abul Kashem appointed as the Returning Officer for the polls while 12 assistant returning officers will assist him.

A total of 29,48,510 voters could exercise their voting rights at newly formed 18 wards and six reserved wards in DNCC, Huda said, adding a total of 7,516 voting rooms will be set up at 1,349 voting centres.

Apart from this, a total of 4, 77,510 voters could cast their votes at 233 voting centers at the newly formed 18 wards and six reserved wards for women in DSCC.
