Police Week begins today

DHAKA, Jan 08, 2018 (BSS) – The Police Week-2018 will begin cross the country today with the motto “Remedy of Militancy and Drugs: Commitment of Bangladesh Police”.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the five-day programme on Rajarbagh Police Lines ground in the city.

She will take salute in the annual parade of 11 contingents of police force in the inaugural session.

The Prime Minister will handover awards in four categories to 182 policemen for their outstanding performance in 2017.

Of the police personnel, 30 will get Bangladesh Police Medal (BPM) while 71 President Police Medal (PPM), 28 Bangladesh Police Medal (BPM-Service) and 53 President Police Medal (PPM-Service) awards for their bravery and courage in their services in the last one year.

The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the newly constructed police auditorium at Rajarbagh. She will visit the stalls of Police Nari Kallyan Samiti (Punak). Later, she will participate in the Kallyan Parade with police personnel.

Superintendent of Police (SP) and Commander of Parade Md Moazzem Hossain will lead the parade.

On the second day of the week, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will attend a conference with high officials of police at OIC Conference Centre around 9.45am on January 9.

On the eve of the Police Week-2018, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina lauded the role of the members of Bangladesh Police in ensuring law and order defeating militancy and terrorism across the country.

In separate messages, they wished a success of the Police Week.

Recalling the martyred member of Bangladesh Police, who sacrificed their lives in the War of Liberation, President Abdul Hamid said, “It is the police, who first put up armed resistance at Rajarbagh Police Lines on March 26, 1971, responding to the call of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.”

He said the role of police is very important for maintaining domestic security and ensuring law and order.

The President also said the police have been playing a vital role in maintaining discipline and public safety, ensuring law and order and in combating militancy and terrorism across the country.

Bangladesh Police is lauded at home and abroad for its outstanding role in combating militancy, he said adding that the image of Bangladesh has brightened due to their role in maintaining peace in different war affected countries under the United Nations.

He also hoped that the police will be more responsible while discharging their duties.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said “The competence of police has been lauded in the local and international arenas for combating militancy and terrorism. The image of the country has increased in the world for their outstanding contribution to the United Nation (UN) missions.”

“The Awami League government has taken different initiatives such as increasing manpower, introducing technology, giving timely training and forming new specialized units to make the police force efficient, people friendly and promising,” she also said.

“We have formed “Police Anti Terrorism Unit” to combat militancy and terrorism. The inclusion of the women police in different units has been increased gradually,” she added.
