Speeding causes over 30 deaths in Fiji this year 2018-12-27 12:43:46

SUVA, Dec. 27,2018 (BSS/Xinhua) — Fijian Police Force revealed on Thursday that there were at least 33 deaths caused by speeding in Fiji this year, according to local media.

Fiji Police Director Traffic Mahesh Mishra said speeding remained a major concern in Fiji. In the last 25 days over 9,900 drivers were booked for various traffic offences while more than 58,000 drivers have been booked for speeding so far this year.

Despite the warnings, drivers haven’t changed their attitudes and continue to violate traffic laws, said Mishra.

“Thirty-three people have lost their lives through speeding and drunk through drive this year and 15 people have lost their lives through drink and drive. This is the alarming statistics as far. Life is being lost on our roads. This is just due to the negligence and recklessness of drivers.”

“You should know that the speed limit is 50 or 60 kmph but here drivers have been caught driving at 80 to 100 kmph. Drivers need to understand that if you are driving at that speed you are going to get into an accident.”

Fiji’s Land Transport Authority registered 110,763 vehicles last year.

The increasing number of vehicles is a challenge for the authority as it maintains the country’s road network system through the widening of roads to cater for the number of cars and to ease traffic congestion.
