Re-excavation of Kathurer Khal begins in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Dec 26, 2018 (BSS) – The re-excavation work of 4km long Kathurer
Khal under Urya union of Fulchhari upazila here began today amid much
enthusiasm.

Operation and Maintenance Division of Bangladesh Water Development Board
(BWDB) will implement the work under the project of Re-excavation of Small
river, Khal and Water Bodies in 64 districts (Ist phase) at the cost of TK
41.48 lakh while Government of Bangladesh will provide the fund, office
sources said.

An inaugural function organized by the BWDB’s local office was held at
Khathurer Khal area of the union in the upazila on Wednesday morning with
executive engineer of BWDB M. Mokhlesur Rahman in the chair.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Matin addressed the function as the chief
guest and additional deputy commissioner (Revenue) Tofayel Hossain, district
fisheries officer Abdud Dayan Dulu, upazila nirbahi officer Abdul Halim
Tolstoy were present at the event as the special guests. Agricultural
extension officer of the board M. Shafiqur Rahman was the moderator at the
programme.

Earlier, scientific officer of River Research Institute, Faridpur
Toufiquzzaman delivered a speech highlighting the significance and importance
of re-excavation of the canal and its contribution to agriculture and
fisheries sectors.

DC Abdul Matin in his speech said re-excavation of the canal is very
crucial to maintain the flow of canal water. Cultivation of crops using
surface water of the water bodies including canals can ensure food security
of the country and meet the demand of protein.

The DC also instructed the concerned, including the officials and the
contractor of BWDB, to do the work with transparency and accountability and
complete it timely.

He also sought whole hearted cooperation of the people to expedite the
development work of the district.

Later, DC Abdul Matin formally inaugurated the re-excavation work of the
canal as the chief guest.

A large number of people including the officials, public representatives,
local elite and journalists of print and electronic media were present on the
occasion.
