DHAKA, Dec 24, 2018 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court
(SC) today upheld the High Court (HC) order on staying candidacy of eight
aspirants, including seven BNP candidates, for contesting the upcoming 11th
parliamentary elections slated for December 30.

Chamber Judge of Appellate Division Justice Md Nuruzzaman passed “no
order” upon separate writ petitions filed by the candidates seeking stay on
the HC order.

The seven BNP aspirants are- Faridul Kabir Talukder from Jamalpur-4,
Fazlur Rahman from Joypurhat-1, MA Abdul Majid from Jhenidah-2, Abu Sayeed
Chand from Rajshahi-6, Engineer Moslem Uddin from Brahmanbaria-4, Khandaker
Abu Ashfaq from Dhaka-1 and Tamij Uddin from Dhaka 20 while another candidate
Mahmud Hasan Suman (independent) is from Mymensingh-8.

A SC lawyer Shah Manjurul Haq said that the candidates cannot contest
the polls following the order.

Following separate writ petitions, the HC recently stayed the EC’s
decision that allowed them to contest the election as their resignations from
the posts of upazila chairmen were not accepted by the government.

The eight upazila chairmen filed separate petitions with the Appellate
Division of the Supreme Court on December 23 in order to regain their
candidacy stayed by the HC.
