Rain holds up WTA Auckland quarter-finals

AUCKLAND, Jan 4, 2018 (BSS/AFP) – Players will have to contest both the
quarter and semi-finals of the WTA Auckland Classic in one day after rain
washed out daytime play on Thursday.

After a five-hour wait in the rain, the decision was made to move two of
the quarter-finals to Friday.

“Due to inclement weather, the day session has been cancelled,” tournament
organisers said in a brief statement at 5:00 pm (0400 GMT).

There was no immediate decision to cancel the night quarter-final between
top seed Caroline Wozniacki and American teen Sofia Kenin in case the weather
clears.

The day match between fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska and Sachia Vickery
was also added to the night agenda.

However, the forecast is for the rain to continue through the night and
play is unlikely.

The quarter-finals rescheduled to Friday see number two seed Julia Goerges
play Polona Hercog, and third seed Barbora Strycova plays Hsieh Su-Wei.
