Rich tributes to noted film director Amjad Hossain in city
DHAKA, Dec 22, 2018 (BSS) – People from all strata thronged the Central Shaheed Minar today to pay their tributes and have the last glimpse of eminent film director and actor Amjad Hossain who breathed his last at a Bangkok Hospital on December 14.
His body was kept on the premises of the Shaheed Minar for an hour from 11 am when film directors, actors and actresses, artistes, politicians and representatives of different social, cultural and professional bodies and institutions paid homage by placing wreaths on the coffin of the celebrated son of this soil.
Family members and relatives of the veteran film director including his two sons Shakil and Dodul were also present on the occasion.
Bangla Academy officers and employees paid tributes at first to the eminent film director, followed by Directors Association, Dhaka University, Shilpakala Academy, Mahila Awami League, Swadhinata Parishad, Jatiya Kabita Parishad, Prachyanatya, Television Natyakar Sangha and Bangabandhu Lekhok Parishad.
Cultural personalities and academics including Syed Hasan Imam, Ramendu Majumder, Mamunur Rashid, Mashi Uddin Shaker, Dr Abdul Manan Chowdhury and Dr Muhammad Samad, among others, paid homage to Amjad and recalled the eventful life and career of the noted film director.
The body of Amjad Hossain, who received Ekushey Padak and the National Film Award, was brought back home from Bangkok on Friday evening. Amjad Hossain’s son Shakil told BSS that the eminent film director will be laid to eternal rest tomorrow at his village home in Jamalpur.
The veteran director breathed his last at Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok on December 14.
On November 18, he suffered a stroke at his residence in the capital and was shifted to Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok for better treatment, Amjad’s son Dodul said.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had taken the responsibility for the treatment of Amjad Hossain. She donated Taka 42.35 lakh for Amjad Hossain’s treatment abroad.
Amjad won the Bangladesh National Film Award in Best Director category twice – for the films “Golapi Ekhon Traine” (1978) and “Bhat De” (1984).
He directed a number of films including Agun Niye Khela in 1967, Julekha in 1967, Balyo Bandhu in 1968, Pitaputra in 1970, Koshai in 1980, Abar Tora Manush Hoin 1973, Nayanmoni in 1976, Golapi Ekhon Traine in 1978, Sundori in 1979 and Bhat Dey in 1984.
He was born at Iqbalpur village in Jamalpur Sadar upazila on August 14 in 1942.
