Netherlands to provide $12.5m to improve Dhaka’s food system

DHAKA, Dec 20, 2018 (BSS) – The Netherlands will provide $12.5 million
grant to Bangladesh to implement the ‘Support for Modeling, Planning and
Improving Dhaka’s Food System’ project.

With the financial support from the Netherlands and technical support from
the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FA), the Ministry of Local Government,
Rural Development and Cooperatives and FAO will jointly implement the five-
year long project beginning next year, said a press release of the Economic
Relations Division (ERD).

ERD Secretary Monowar Ahmed and Resident Representative of FAO Robert
Simpson signed the agreement on behalf of their respective sides yesterday at
the NEC-2 conference room in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area.

The Ambassador of Netherlands to Dhaka Harry Verweij and other high
officials of the FAO and LGRD Ministry were present.

The main objectives of the project are to conduct safe, sustainable and
stable food management operations in the Dhaka metropolis area.

Besides, the project will also put emphasis on searching alternate strategy
for ensuring safe, healthy and nutritious food for the women and poor section
of people.

Wageningen University of Research (WUR) will provide technical assistance
to the project through FAO, the release said.

The project will also aim at achieving some specific goals of the National
Food Policy (NFP-2006), National Food Policy-Plan of Action (2008-2015), and
7th Five Year Plan.
