3 killed, 5 missing as boat capsizes in India

NEW DELHI, Dec. 11, 2018 (BSS/XINHUA) – Three people were killed and five
others reported missing after a boat carrying them capsized in Yamuna river
in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said Tuesday.

Six people rescued from the water have been hospitalized.

The boat capsized Monday evening near Kydganj in Allahabad district, about
210 km south of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

“Last evening a boat carrying 14 people capsized here in river Yamuna. Six
people were rescued,” a police official said. “Three people were killed in
the tragedy and their bodies have been fished out, while as five others are
missing.”

The deceased were identified as three women.

Authorities have pressed in disaster response force personnel and divers to
search the missing ones.

Police said the search operation that was suspended late in night has again
been started again in the morning.

According to officials, 12 people from Maharashtra state were on the boat,
along with a priest and boatman.

“These people had come to Allahabad to immerse the ashes of their
relative,” the police said. “We are being told that the boat had developed a
leak and water had seeped into it that caused its capsize.”
