Rokeya worked for advancement of women: academics
RANGPUR, Dec 9, 2018 (BSS) – Academics in a seminar at Begum Rokeya
University, Rangpur (BRUR) today said great woman Begum Rokeya worked
throughout her life for advancement of the women and the society as a whole.
They came up with the observation in the event arranged by the BRUR
authority in observance of the Rokeya Day-2018 on the campus through various
programmes.
The programmes included placing of wreaths at the portrait of Begum Rokeya,
inauguration of Rokeya Book Fair and exhibition of her books, seminar, quiz
competitions and staging of drama based on Rokeya’s story.
Vice-Chancellor (VC) of BRUR Professor Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah
inaugurated the programme with placing wraths at the portrait of Begum Rokeya
followed by bringing out of a huge ‘Shobhayatra’ on the campus.
He inaugurated the fair and exhibition and attended the seminar styled
“Begum Rokeya’s Thoughts on Motherland” as the chief guest.
Presided over by Convener of the Rokeya Day Observance Committee Prof Dr Md
Morshed Hossain, Lecturer of the Department of Women and Gender Studies
Kuntola Chowdhury moderated the seminar.
Prof of the Department of Bengali Dr Sorifa Salowa Dina presented keynote
essay on “Begum Rokeya’s Thoughts on Motherland” in the seminar as resource
person.
Dean of the Faculty of Arts Prof Parimal Chandra Barman, Dean of the
Faculty of Engineering and Technology Prof Abu Kalam Md Farid Ul Islam, Dean
of the Faculty of Science Prof Gazi Mazharul Islam, Prof RM Hafizur Rahman,
Assistant Prof Humayun Kabir and a number of students addressed the seminar.
The speakers said great woman Begum Rokeya conducted her activities not
only for women renaissance in the then colonial society of the subcontinent
but she also expanded her huge endevours for regeneration of the humanity as
a whole.
Recalling unparallel contribution of Begum Rokeya, Prof Barman said she was
the first woman to realise the complete necessity of ensuring female
education and human rights of womenfolk for their real development, dignity
and civilised status.
Prof Kalimullah stressed on proper implementation of the philosophy and
ideals of Begum Rokeya for establishing freedom of the womenfolk, their
empowerment, rights and dignity in every sphere of the society and national
life.
