Dogs vaccination programme in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Dec 7, 2018 (BSS) – Dogs Vaccination (MDV) programme has
been going on in the district since December 04 aimed at building rabies free
district.

Communicable Disease Control unit of Directorate General of Health
Department under the Ministry of Health is conducting the programme at grass
root level in cooperation with local health department, said Sadar upazila
health and family planning officer Dr. ABM Abu Hanif.

Dogs including stray ones staying at homes and moving freely in five
upazilas of the district will be vaccinated from December 04 to December 17
in two phases, said MDV supervisor HSM Tarif.

The programme would be conducted at Sadar, Sadullapur, Shaghata and
Fulchhari upazilas here in first phase from December 04 to 12 and at
Palashbari, Sundarganj, and Gobindaganj upazilas in second phase from
December 10 to 17, he also said.

Veterinary officer of the programme Dr. Bidyut Kumar Dutta said rabies
is a deadly virus which can be spread by any animal. In Bangladesh, 2,000
human deaths occur every year for not taking preventable treatment after dog
bites.

Rabies is most often transmitted via the saliva of bats, coyotes, foxes,
raccoons, and skunks. In Bangladesh, stray dogs are the most likely animal to
transmit rabies. The virus has also been found in cows, cats, ferrets, and
horses, he added.

After being bitten by a rabid animal, the virus is deposited in the
muscle and subcutaneous tissue; he said adding that the virus then travels
via peripheral nerves to the brain and from there to nearly all parts of the
body and ultimately leads to deaths.

In this context, the veterinary officer suggested all the infected
people to go to physicians without delay and take proper treatment before
symptoms such as weakness, fever, headache, anxiety, confusion, and fear and
avoidance of water of rabies begin.

Civil surgeon Dr. Abdus Shakur sought cooperation of all concerned in
all the upazilas in the district.
