46 disabled people get wheel chairs in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Dec 6, 2018 (BSS) – A total of 46 persons with disabilities of four upazias in the district received assistive devices-tri-cycle and wheel chairs today.

On the occasion, a discussion was also held at the conference room of Technical Training Centre (TTC) at Farazipara under Kholahati union of Sadar upaizla here on Thursday.

ADD International arranged the function under the project of Securing Employment and Economic Development around Jute Textile and Light Engineering Sector in North-West Bangladesh being implemented by RDRS Bangladesh with the technical support of Practical Action while European Commission is providing the fund.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sebastin Rema addressed the function as the chief guest and district disability affairs officer Akhtar Hossain and acting general secretary of Gaibandha Press Club Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman were present as special guests.

Principal of the TTC Atiqur Rahman Atiq presided over the meeting while programme officer of ADD International Arefa Parvin conducted the ceremony as a moderator.

The speakers said the persons with disabilities are not the burden of the society but they may be worthy citizens of the country if they are rehabilitated in the society with providing them with need-base training and others supports including financial one.

Earlier, a power point presentation on the overall activities of the project in three upazilas– Shaghata, Gobindaganj and Sundarganj– of the district was also done by regional manager of Practical Action M. Nehal Azmat.

DC Sebastin Rema in his speeches said the holistic and collective efforts of both the public and the private organizations have become an urgent need for ensuring their fundamental rights of the persons with disabilities.

Terming the challenged people as an integral part of the society, the deputy commissioner put emphasis on mainstreaming them through creating a friendly atmosphere for the people with disabilities to take the nation ahead.

Later, Sebastin Rema formally distributed 41 tri-cycles and 5 wheel chairs to the persons with disabilities coming from four upazilas of the district as the chief guest.

The instructors and the staff of TTC, project officials and beneficiaries, government stake holders and invited guess including journalists attended the programme.
