Congenial atmosphere for persons with disabilities stressed

RAJSHAHI, Dec 3, 2018 (BSS) – Speakers at a post-rally discussion here
today underscored the need for ensuring congenial atmosphere to make an end
to discrimination against the persons with disabilities to enable them
leading a decent life.

Terming the disabled persons as the integral part of the society, they
mentioned time has come to bring them into the mainstream of the society for
overall development of the nation.

Department of social service (DSS) and District Administration organised
the discussion at Shishu Academy Auditorium marking the International Day of
Persons with Disabilities and National Disabled Day-2018.

Various organizations working for elevating living and livelihood condition
of the persons with special needs joined the programme.

Chaired by DSS Deputy Director Rashedul Kabir, the meeting was addressed,
among others, by its Divisional Deputy Director Hasina Momtaz, Member of
National Social Welfare Council Mozammel Haque, DSS Assistant Director Soheli
Rashid, District Children Affairs Officer Monjur Murshed and Person with
Disability Affairs Officer Shariat Ullah.

The discussants unanimously emphasised the need for establishing a sound
and friendly atmosphere for the disabled persons to ensure a dignified
position for them in society.

They appreciated the theme of the day, “Empowering persons with
disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equity”, saying it was important
to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Referring to the government steps for welfare of the disabled persons, they
said all concerned should make the best use of all facilities in the greater
interest of these people.

Hasina Momtaz urged the affluent section of the society as well as the
philanthropists to come forward with their helping hands to supplement the
government’s efforts to properly place the disadvantaged people in the
society.

The disabled children must be given an equal opportunity in institutional
education like the privileged ones so that they could grow as worthy citizens
and contribute to the country’s development, she said.
