Communal harmony, peace prevailing in CHT region: Bir Bahadur

DHAKA, Dec 2, 2018 (BSS) – State Minister for CHT Affairs Ministry Bir
Bahadur Ushwe Sing today said communal harmony, peace and development process
are prevailing in Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) region.

“We are taking various development programmes to accelerate development
process in CHT region,” he told a discussion marking the completion of 21
years of the CHT Peace Accord in the CIRDAP auditorium here.

Bir Bahadur said the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman
had taken development programmes for the development of CHT region. But the
development programmes have been hampered after assassination of Bangabandhu,
he added.

The present government is implementing various development project at a
cost of Taka ten thousand crore he said adding, peace treaty is expediting
socioeconomic and cultural development of the people in CHT region.

Chairman of Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board (CHTDB) Nobo Bikrom
Kishore Tripura, among others, addressed the discussion with Secretary of CHT
Affairs Ministry Md Nurul Amin in the chair.

The treaty was signed on December 2, 1997 between the government and the
Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samiti (PCJSS) during the first tenure of
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, ending bloody conflicts in three hill
districts.

The then Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Abul Hasnat Abdullah signed the
agreement on behalf of the government while Joritindra Bodhipriyo Larma
(Santu Larma) on behalf of PCJSS.
