Bir Pratik Taramon Bibi no more

RANGPUR, Dec 1, 2018 (BSS) – Taramon Bibi, Bir Pratik, a veteran woman
freedom fighter, died at her Katcharipara residence in Rajibpur upazila of
Kurigram in the early hours of today.

She was 63.

“My beloved mother breathed her last at 1:30 am yesterday night at her
bedroom,” Abu Taher, 32, only son of Taramon Bibi, told the national news
agency today.

She is survived by her husband Abdul Mazid, 65, only son Abu Taher and
only daughter Majeda Khatun, 34.

The news of her death cast a pall of gloom in the socio-cultural and
political arena of Rajibpur, Kurigram in Rangpur division.

Talking to BSS, Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram Sultana Pervin said the
Namaj-e-Janaza of Taramon Bibi will be held on her residence courtyard after
the Johr prayers today.

“A smartly contingent of police forces will give a guard of honour and
bugle play at the last post before her Namaj-e-Janaza. She will be buried
there with full state of honour,” Sultana said.

Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram Sultana Pervin, Superintendent of Police
Mehedul Karim, Rajibpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mehedi Hasan, Chilmari
upazila Chairman Shawkat Ali Sarker, Bir Bikram, will attend her Namaj-e-
Janaza and burial process.

Taramon took part in the War of Liberation at the call of Bangabandhu after
being inspired by Havildar Mohir at Rajibpur Muktijoddha Camp.

She first started cooking for freedom fighters—– soon began spying to
gather information— and subsequently took part in the battles after getting
arms training.

After independence, she returned to her native Sankar Madhobpur village
(now eroded by river erosion) under Rajibpur upazila and got married to Abdul
Mazid in 1974. The then government of Bangabandhu awarded Taramon the
gallantry title ‘Bir Pratik’ in recognition of her courage and bravery during
the War of Liberation.
