Preventing repression, violence against women underscored

RANGPUR, Nov 28, 2018 (BSS) – Government officials and human rights
activists at a human chain programme have stressed on strengthening social
movement with a changed social mindset to prevent all sorts of repression and
violence against women.

They made these observations in the programme arranged in observance of
the International Women Repression Prevention Fortnight- 2018 at Katchari
Bazar zero point in the city on Tuesday.

The district administration in association with the District Women
Affairs Department and a number of human rights, professional and women
rights organisations organised the human chain programme.

Local leaders and workers of Bangladesh Mohila Parishad, Jatiya Mohila
Sangstha, Prottyasha Protibondhi Nari O Shishu Unnayan Sangstha, World Vision
Bangladesh, Nari Nirjatan Network and other organisations participated in the
programme.

Earlier, many women activists, government and NGO officials and
employees, human rights and sociocultural activists, professionals, teachers,
students and elite, took part in a colourful rally that parade the main city
streets.

With District Women Affairs Officer Kawser Parveen in the chair, Deputy
Director (Local Government) Ruhul Amin Mian addressed the programme as the
chief guest.

Noted women activists Monjushree Saha and Dilara Begum Dulari, General
Secretary of district Mohila Awami League Advocate Zakia Sultana Choite,
women rights activist of RDRS Bangladesh Somse Ara Bilkis, among others,
spoke.

Monjushree Saha discussed the situation on repression and violence
against women and laid emphasis on comprehensive GO-NGOs efforts involving
all stakeholders to eliminate these curses and establish gender equality in
the society.

“The sustainable development goals might not be achieved without
bringing an end to all sorts of repression and violence against women and
gender disparity to empower the women and ensure their equal rights, dignity
and honour in the society.

Kawser Parveen discussed the government steps taken to ensure equal
participation of women in all development and sociopolitical activities to
build a middle income nation by 2021 and attain SDGs by 2030 on way to build
a developed country by 2041.

The chief guest urged all stakeholders to work unitedly with a changed
social mindset for eliminating all types of repression and violence against
women for building a sustainably developed society.
