Local government bodies asked to work impartially during polls

DHAKA, Nov 27, 2018 (BSS) – The officials of the local government institutions, including union parishad, pourashava, city corporation, district council and upazila parishad, have been asked to work impartially and not to participate in election campaign at its particular areas.

The Local Government Division under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives issued an executive order in this regard on Monday (November 19), which would remain effective till 15 days after the election scheduled to be held on December 30 next.

Under the order, the local government bodies were asked not to undertake and implement any development scheme which may use in favour of getting votes or campaign for any particular candidate during the polls.

Even the local government institutions will not give or provide any assurance of grants to any particular person or organisation that would influence voters or carry out campaign in favour of any particular candidate.

The offices, transports and other properties of the local government institutions would not be used in election campaign for any particular candidate, according to the official order.

The officials and staff of the local government bodies have been asked not to participate in election works or campaign.

But, the local government will provide cooperation to the particular authorities for election works, including setting up polling centres, if they want.

On the other hand, the representatives of the local government institutions will not use their portfolios or government facilities for election purpose for any candidate, the official order said.

The government will take action against the particular local government institutions if they show negligence in discharging their responsibilities under the order.
