Flyers fire general manager Hextall

LOS ANGELES, Nov 27, 2018 (BSS/AFP) – Ron Hextall, whose NHL team has
gotten off to a slow start this season, was fired by the Philadelphia Flyers
on Monday. The firing comes days after the Flyers lost 6-0 to the Toronto
Maple Leafs. Philadelphia is 10-11-2 on the season and have dropped five of
their last six games.

Flyers president Paul Holmgren thanked Hextall for his “many significant
contributions, but it has become clear that we no longer share the same
philosophical approach concerning the direction of the team.”

Hextall was a popular Flyers goaltender in the 1980s and known best for his
tenacity and feisty playing style.

So it is ironic he was let go after more than four seasons due in part to
the team’s lack of solid defence and goaltending.

It is also believed that coach Dave Hakstol, who Hextall hired three years
ago, could be on the way out.

Hextall played 13 seasons in the NHL and had two stints covering 11 years
with the Flyers. He also spent seven seasons as assistant general manager
with the Los Angeles Kings.
