“The number of taxpayers is now around 38 lakh. The number was 15 lakh in 2015 while it was only seven lakh in 2009,” he told journalists while submitting his tax return through online at the finance ministry in the city.

Earlier, he said, people did not want to give income tax, but the attitude has now been changed a lot. Now, they consider the tax officials as service providers, he added.

He hoped that the taxpayers will cross one crore soon as all classes people, especially young, are showing eagerness to pay tax. “Now, people think, country is giving them many things, they will have to give the country something,” he added.

By paying tax, the finance minister said, taxpayers are participating in the welfare of others. Following the goal set by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina , the government is also providing all sorts of supports to pay tax and join the welfare of the people, he added.
