Boro cultivation begins in Manikganj

MANIKGANJ, Dec 28, 2017 (BSS) – Farmers in the district are passing busy
time preparing fields and planting Boro paddy saplings.

They started to plant local Boro saplings in the vast char areas with
the decreased water of the river Padma, Jamuna, Dhaleshwari, Kaliganga and
Ichamati of the district.

Some landless cultivators were also planting Boro on the river beds.

Abdul Hamid, who was planting Boro saplings at the char of Jamuna under
Baghutia union of Daulatpur Upazila said, “I have no land for cultivation,
but I need some straw for my cows besides some crops. So I have been
cultivating Boro in the char areas of the Jamuna every year. If somebody
claims the ownership of the lands I will share the crop with him.”

Mofizuddin, another Boro cultivator, said the production of Boro is
generally small, but it gives us straw for our cows. It was found that some
cultivators were shifting their Boro saplings from dry place to wet and muddy
places where there was still little water. Some char areas of Dhaleshwari,
Kaliganga and Ichamoti have already been covered with green Boro plants which
were planted earlier.

Akkas uddin of village Gilanda under Manikganj Sadar upazila has
cultivated Boro in four bighas of land this season. He said the local variety
of Boro does not need any fertilizer. “We get some paddy and straw for us in
early time from the uncultivated sandy char areas,” Akkas added.

The Department of Agriculture Extension sources said the local varieties
of Boro are helpful for the farmers as they get some extra crops as well as
straw for their cows.
