Citizens’ Tax Tribunal 2018 to be held at DU tomorrow

DHAKA, Nov 19, 2018 (BSS) – With the objective to bring attention of
Government and stakeholders to ensure progressive tax system that reduce the
burden on the poor, ActionAid Bangladesh is going to organize ‘Citizens’ Tax
Tribunal 2018′ tomorrow at Dhaka University (DU).

Representatives from different professions including govt. officials,
businesspersons, corporate, researchers, political leaders, garment workers,
students will join the event at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban
Auditorium on the campus, said a press release.

Parliamentarian Fazle Hossain Badsha, DU Economics Professor M M Akash,
Former Chairperson of NBR Dr. Md Abdul Mazid, Professor of Development
Studies department Dr. Kazi Maruful Islam, Economic Reporters’ Forum
President Saif Uddin Dilal are expected to be present at the programme as
resource persons with Farah Kabir, Country Director of ActionAid Bangladesh
in the chair.

The tribunal will have three key groups namely – the panel of jury,
plaintiff and amicus curiae. This citizens’ tribunal will be a platform for
stakeholders to express their grievances about the burden of VAT, corporate
tax avoidance and its impact on select groups and society at large. Six cases
will be presented — VAT Burden and Tax Avoidance — in two sessions.

Moreover, around 400 people from eight divisions will participate in the
‘Citizens’ Tax Tribunal 2018′.
