President, PM pay tributes to poet Sufia Kamal

DHAKA, Nov 19, 2018 (BSS) – President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister
Sheikh Hasina today paid rich tributes to the memory of poet Begum Sufia
Kamal on the occasion of her 19th death anniversary.

The death anniversary of Sufia Kamal will be observed across the country
tomorrow.

In his message, the President said: “Sufia Kamal was a pioneer to the
movement for women rights and a bold warrior against religious dogmatism. She
played an active role in language movement, struggle for freedom, the War of
Liberation and every movement of human rights”.

Abdul Hamid said the great woman was one of the key-organisers of the
movement for war crimes trial.

Sufia Kamal did not just make herself educated but waged movement to
bring scopes for backward womenfolk, the President said, adding that
Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, which was established by Sufia Kamal, is a unique
institution to realise the women rights.

Because of her outstanding contribution to different democratic, social
and cultural movements, she was dubbed as “Janani Sahasika,” Hamid said. “She
will be ever remembered among us because of her versatile talents”.

In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said: “I convey my profound
respect to the memory of Begum Sufia Kamal, one of the pioneers of
progressive, non-communal, democratic and women emancipation movements in
Bangladesh”.

The write-ups of Poet Sufia Kamal in all branches of literature stir the
readers, she said.

Noting that the thoughts of Begum Rokeya had a far-reaching impact on the
life of Sufia Kamal, the premier recalled her role in the movement against
banning Tagore songs by Pakistan government in 1961.

She said Sufia Kamal was the image of a traditional Bengali woman and an
affectionate mother. “On the other hand, she had played an uncompromising
role in every movement in Bangladesh.”

Sheikh Hasina said Sufia Kamal’s role inspired the pro-liberation forces
when the distortion of history began in the country after the assassination
of the greatest Bangalee of all times and Father of the Nation Bangabandhu
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975.

The President and the Prime Minister prayed for eternal peace of the
departed soul of Sufia Kamal.
