AL urges EC for action against BNP for triggering violence
DHAKA, Nov 14, 2018 (BSS) – The ruling Awami League today urged the Election Commission (EC) to take proper action against the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for carrying out attack on police and going on a rampage in violation of electoral code of conduct in city’s Nayapaltan area.
Prime Minister’s Political Advisor HT Imam made this demand after a delegation of the ruling party called on Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda and other Election Commissioners at the Election Commission Bhaban this afternoon.
HT Imam, also co-chair of the AL election steering committee, stuck to the stance of not deferring the election schedule any more. “We said that the election has been shifted to December 30….there should be no more delay- not even for a day or for an hour,” he added.
Earlier, a delegation of the Oikyafront led by Dr Kamal Hossen went to the EC and demanded for shifting the elections for three more weeks.
Ruling out the demand made by the BNP, HT Imam said in the past the elections were held on December 29, but the Christmas Day or the New Year were not any barriers on way to holding elections.
Giving a brief resume of negative aspects of holding elections after December, HT Imam said “if we hold elections after December than few lakhs of new voters will become eligible for inclusion in the voter list on the first of January next”. Legal complications might arise if these new voters could not be included in the voter list, he added.
As per the existing schedule, the last date for filing nomination papers has been fixed on November 28 followed by nomination paper scrutiny on December 2, nomination paper withdrawal on December 9 and voting on December 30.
