14-party alliance components to contest JS polls with ‘boat’

DHAKA, Nov 11, 2018 (BSS) – The component parties of Awami League (AL)-led 14-party alliance will contest the 11th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) elections with the AL’s election symbol ‘boat’.

An AL delegation led by its Organising Secretary Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Noufel handed over a letter to the Election Commission (EC) in this regard this afternoon.

Besides, the BNP-led 20-party alliance today informed the EC that the alliance components will use the BNP’s election symbol ‘sheaf of paddy’ for contesting in the upcoming general election.

A delegation led by Bijon Kanti Sarker, an adviser to the BNP chairperson, handed over a letter to the commission in this regard.

The delegation also informed the EC that the BNP-led 20-party alliance and Jatiya Oikyafront will jointly take part in the election. They also requested the EC to defer the parliamentary polls date by a month.

Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda told the journalists that the decision on deferment of polls date will be taken tomorrow.

Earlier, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASAD) and Bangladesh Tariqat Federation (BTF) today informed the EC that they want to participate in the 11th general election from Awami League (AL) led 14-party alliance with the election symbol ‘boat’.

JASAD President Hasanul Huq Inu and BTF Secretary General Syed Rezaul Haque Chandpuri today sent separate letters to the Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda in this regard.

Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) also sent a letter to the EC that the party wants to take part in the polls with symbols ‘sheaf of paddy’ and ‘umbrella’.

The LDP Joint Secretary General Shahadat Hossain Selim handed over the letter, signed by the Party President Dr Oli Ahmed, to the EC.

The EC has set December 23 for the 11th parliamentary election while the last date of submission of nomination papers is November 19 and the scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on November 22.

The deadline for withdrawal of candidature is November 29 while the election symbols will be distributed among the political parties on November 30.
