Most seized VoIP SIMs belong to Robi

DHAKA, Nov 11, 2018 (BSS) – In a fortnight-long drive, the telecom regulator in cooperation with RAB seized 42,150 SIMs for illegal VoIP in Dhaka and Chattogram, and most of those belonged to private mobile phone operator Robi.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) today revealed the update at a press conference at BTRC conference room.

BTRC and RAB, conducting the drive from October 14 to November 1 in 26 establishments of Dhaka and Chattogram, also seized various types of equipment worth Taka 1.23 crore and arrested 24 people in connection with the seizure.

Cautioning the mobile phone operators, BTRC acting Chairman M Jahurul Haque said they can’t avoid their responsibility.

He said BTRC did not hold the press conference to blame the operators. “But they (operators) have the responsibility to keep monitoring their SIMs to find where those are going. Keep your distributors under vigilance. Otherwise, BTRC would be compelled to enforce law.”

BTRC said they recovered Robi’s 16,812 SIMs, Teletalk’s 15,939 SIMs, Banglalink’s 6,176 and Grameenphone’s 3,223 SIMs among the seizure of total 42,150 SIMs. A total of 28 cases were filed under Bangladesh Telecommunication Act-2001 in Dhaka and Chattogram.
