Ensuring safety of ethnic minority people during polls stressed

DHAKA, Nov 08, 2018 (BSS) – Speakers at a roundtable discussion here today underscored the need for ensuring security of the people belonging to different ethnic minority groups during the upcoming 11th parliamentary elections.

“Political leaders of all levels should ensure security of the ethnic minority groups living in their respective areas during the upcoming general elections,” addressing the discussion, Social Welfare Minister Rashed Khan Menon said.

Menon underpinned the need for formulating an anti-discrimination act and establishing an ethnic minority commission for ensuring security of the country’s ethnic minority groups.

Sharee, a human rights organization, organized the discussion titled ‘National Election-2018 and Security of Ethnic Minority” at VIP lounge of the Jatiya Press Club (JPC) in the city with its Executive Director Preo Bala Biswas in the chair.

National Human Rights Commission Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque, human rights activist Sultana Kamal, Bangladesh Hindu-Bouddha-Christian Oikya Parishad General Secretary Advocate Rana Dasgupta, JPC General Secretary Farida Yasmin, human rights activist Dr Meghna Guhathakurta, the Daily Sangbad’s acting Editor Khandaker Muniruzzaman and Bangladesh Christian Oikya Parishad President Nirmal Rosario took part in the discussion, among others.

Reazul Hoque said the ethnic minority groups should come forward in realizing their demands instead of putting them into a state of frustration.

In the discussion, Sultana Kamal urged the political parties not to give nomination to any communal-person in the upcoming general election.

Conducted by the Daily Bhorer Kagoj Editor Shyamal Dutta, Professor of Dhaka University (DU) History Department Mesbah Kamal presented a concept paper in the discussion.
