S. Korea’s budget for basic science research to rise 21.5 pct in 2019

SEOUL, Nov. 7, 2018 (BSS/Xinhua) – South Korea’s science and technology
ministry said Wednesday that its budget to support the basic science research
will rise by a double-digit next year.

The Ministry of Science and ICT said it planned to spend 1.18 trillion won
(1.05 billion U.S. dollars) supporting the basic science research in 2019, up
21.5 percent from this year’s budget. It is subject to the parliamentary
approval later this month.

The 1.18 trillion won included 959.5 billion won (855.6 million U.S.
dollars) allotted into individual research and 221 billion won (197.1 million
U.S. dollars) into group research.

The support budget for individual research jumped 24.1 percent from this
year in a bid to ensure researchers only focus on their works without concern
about funding issues.

The evaluation system will be changed with a focus on process, rather than
results, to guarantee autonomy of the supported researchers.
