DHAKA, Nov 4, 2018 (BSS) – Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN Masud Bin Momen has urged the international community to create an environment of confidence in Myanmar to encourage the displaced Rohingyas to return to their homes in Rakhine State.
“Accountability would serve as an important confidence building measure for the Rohingyas to return voluntarily, without which the repatriation would not be sustainable,” he said while taking part in the General Debate of the UN General Assembly on the Human Rights Council report at UN headquarters in New York on Friday, according to a message received here today.
The envoy said while continued efforts and readiness for safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation of Rohingyas to their original place of abode in the Rakhine state is about to see fruition, one should therefore not be oblivious of the imperativeness of ensuring accountability for the gravest atrocities perpetrated against them.
Momen said Bangladesh has been elected again to the Human Rights Council this year for 2019-2021 representing the Asia-Pacific Group.
“We take this opportunity to once again thank member states for their support to Bangladesh,” he said, “Bangladesh is fully committed to redeeming its pledges and commitments that we have made and upholding the high objectives of the Council”.
Being elected to the Council for twice during the present government’s term is the recognition of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s unstinting efforts to uphold the rights and dignity of people, Momen said.
He said Bangladesh wished to reiterate its commitment to work closely with the Human Rights Council in the coming days.
