Insurance fair begins in Sylhet tomorrow

SYLHET, Dec 21, 2017 (BSS) – A two-day insurance fair begins here tomorrow with a view to promoting the insurance industry in the country.

The Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA) has organised the Insurance Fair 2017 at the gymnasium of the District Sports Council in the northeastern city.

IDRA member and treasurer of the fair organizing committee Borhan Uddin Ahmed said this at a press conference at a city hotel this morning.

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith will inaugurate the fair at Kabi Nazrul auditorium in Sylhet at 10 am. Additional Secretary of the Financial Institutions Division Manik Chandra Dey will attend the inaugural session as the special guest.

Earlier, the IDRA will bring out a rally from the court point of Sylhet city at 9am.

Besides, the two public insurance companies —Jibon Bima Corporation and Sadaran Bima Corporation, a total of 30 non-government insurance companies will participate in the fair.

Of the 30 private insurance companies, 16 are life insurance companies and 14 non-life insurance companies. Insurance companies will settle claims of Tk 19 crore at the fair, said the IDRA member at the press conference.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today gave separate messages on the occasion of the insurance fair.

In his message, President Abdul Hamid said insurance is one of an eco-social security service system of the modern age. The insurance directly give an opportunity to the industries, trade, commerce and persons against possible financial losses and side by side the insurance provide financial protection indirectly to the people across the country, said the president.

After the independence, with the supervision of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman the progress of the Insurance industries began for restructuring the economy of the country. The Awami League government enacted Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority Act in 2010 considering the importance of the insurance industries, said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her message, adding that the authority was established on 2011.

The government has a plan to launch a social insurance system for providing security to people and protection in case of old age risk, incapability, social negligence, joblessness and maternity risk under national social security strategy of the government of Bangladesh in 2015, said the Premier.

“We have taken initiative to launch agriculture insurance, health insurance, education insurance and insurance for the expatriate workers,” said the prime minister.
