Football: Brazil-Argentina clubs to clash in Copa Sudamericana
LUQUE, Paraguay, Dec 21, 2017 (BSS/AFP) – Brazilian and Argentinian clubs will lock horns once more in the opening round of the 2018 Copa Sudamericana it was confirmed Wednesday, a week after the violence-marred finale to this year’s competition.
The pick of the first phase ties will see Argentina’s San Lorenzo — the first winners of the tournament in 2002 — take on 2013 champions Atletico Mineiro from Brazil.
Other ties involving Argentinian and Brazilian clubs include Newell’s Old Boys against Atletico Paranaense and Rosario Central’s meeting with Brazilian giants Sao Paulo.
The draw followed last week’s stormy conclusion to the 2017 Copa Sudamericana, which was won 3-2 on aggregate by Argentina’s Independiente after a second leg 1-1 draw with Brazilian side Flamengo.
The final witnessed fighting both inside and outside the Maracana Stadium in Rio. Riot police used tear gas and stun grenades to quell the violence.
Brazil and Argentina have six teams each in the opening round of the Sudamericana, which is the junior continental club competition in South America after the more prestigious Copa Libertadores.
The identities of three teams in the opening round — one from Chile, and two from Bolivia, are still to be decided.
The 2018 edition will kick off on February 14 with the final to be played over two legs on December 5 and 12.
