No political prisoner in country: Tofail

DHAKA, Nov 1, 2018 (BSS) – Awami League Advisory Council Member and Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed today said the aim of his party is holding a free and fair parliamentary election in the country.

“Our target is to hold a free, fair, participatory and acceptable national election. The Election Commission will do this and the government will cooperate with the commission in doing so,” he told newsmen after a meeting with an Indian business delegation at his secretariat office.

Indian Food and Public Distribution Secretary Ravikant led the business delegation.

The minister said the election will be held with the incumbent government in office while the Election Commission will conduct it.

About the BNP’s demand of releasing the political prisoners, Tofail said there is no political prisoner in the country.

Referring to Bangabandhu’s imprisonment in the past, he said there were no specific charges against Bangabandhu so that the people had released him from jail through mass movement.

But, he said, Khaleda Zia and others are in jail after being convicted on specific charges.

Tofail said they are not political prisoners as there were cases against them.
